  • 610 Million Listings (42% fixed-price listings - up from 38% in 2006)
  • 83.2 Million active users (81.8 million in 2006)
  • 532,000 Stores
  • Paypal’s net total payment volume in 2007 Q4 was $14 billion (Up 35% from 2006 Q4)
  • 57.3 million active registered PayPal accounts (up 5% from 2006)

Half of eBay Users Encounter Fraud

A recent Consumer Reports survey of eBay users found that almost half of eBay buyers have encountered some type of fraud on eBay. The Federal Internet Crime Complaint Center receives more complaints about Internet auction sites than any other type of online fraud.

This is why it is important for Manufacturers to authorize select dealers on eBay. Buyers on eBay are looking for legitimate businesses to buy from and are willing to pay more for an item if they can be assured the transaction will be legitimated.

The survey also revealed that Pay Pal was used in 89% of purchases in the Consumer Reports Survey.

eBay Continues to be the Most Visited Retail Website

According to Nielsen/NetRatings, eBay’s unique visitors increased to 61 million in March 2007, up 10% from March 2006. The second most visited retail site with 42 million unique visitors was Amazon.com, #1 on the Internet Retailer Top 500. This is one of the reasons eBay does anywhere from 20-50% of all online sales. There are a lot of people (221 million registered users in 2006) looking for items on eBay.

PayPal: More Accounts Than AMEX & Discover Combined

  • PayPal has 105 million accounts (More than Amex & Discover Combined)
  • $1.5 Billion of stored value is turned every 3 weeks
  • PayPal provides the payment mechanism for 67% of eBay transactions
  • 15% of all eBay transactions cross international borders

Collecting Income Taxes from eBay Sellers

4.3 million people make a significant chuck of their income from eBay. Many of those sellers on eBay to do not report their eBay earnings to the IRS. eBay argues that it is not a broker or a middle man and should not have to disclose it’s seller’s earnings.

eBay 2006 Sales & Statistics

eBay has released their statistics from 2006.  It’s hard to calculate eBay’s true percentage of total e-commerce sales, but it is a large percent.  We estimate that eBay accounts for any where from 20%-50% of all e-commerce sales. (more…)
